Alexandre was born in 1932 at Akoteman, a small village located 10 km away from Mbalmayo, 45 km away from Yaoundé, the Cameroonian capital city. He was raised by his mother and the extended family.He used to always argue with his mother about religion and colonialism.

His outspoken personality got him expelled from school often. He left Cameroon for France in 1951 to pursue higher education in France.
